Frequently Asked Questions

The Science

‘Home’ fermenting generally utilises a customary inherited method of preserving food. It’s a traditional skill set that can be learnt. It utilises the raw food ingredient (and its microbes) and the conditions in the local environment, namely the kitchen. Food safety conditions and procedures need to be learned and maintained.

Our Bio-Fermentation process utilises 8 specific microbial species and includes testing to ensure a standardised process. Due to the fermented nature there may be some batch-to-batch variation

Carbohydrates and proteins are broken down to create a final product that is a complex mix of highly available bio-active nutrients. Akesi Bio-Fermented Tonics help to restore and maintain the body’s diverse gut microbiota.

Natural killer (NK) cells are a subset of lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) and are important in the body’s defence against viral infections and malignancy. Natural killer cells participate in the body’s innate immunity. Each 15ml serve of an Akesi Bio-Fermented Tonic contains 6 billion colony forming units (cfu) of beneficial microbes as measured in natural killer cell activity (NKCA) when compared to a 25 billion cfu of pure probiotic.

Our modern lifestyle has resulted in a significant change to our diet and physical activity patterns. Research suggests that a disturbance in the gut microbiota is potentially playing a role in the pathogenesis of ‘modern’ chronic diseases. We are witnessing increasing rates of these chronic diseases, for example asthma, allergies, atopic dermatitis, diabetes, obesity and autism. There is evidence in humans that probiotics can be used to treat and prevent diarrhoea in children and Irritable Bowel Syndrome in adults. Probiotics taken in sufficient numbers may restore and maintain the body’s microbiota.

Most commonly we think that beneficial bacteria are ingested, but they can also be absorbed through the skin, or through human to human contact. In the modern western world we have undervalued the art of fermenting our foods, which is why there is a need for Akesi Bio-Fermented Tonics.

Adjusting to any significant change in your diet can cause in some people a change in their gastrointestinal function. If in doubt please contact your healthcare professional.

Do seek out professional help if you suffer from recurrent yeast infections. There is some evidence that shows diet modification (reducing your sugar intake and taking probiotics) can be part of a comprehensive treatment plan for recurrent candida. Saccharomyces boulardii (one of the strains included in our Bio-Fermented Tonics) itself another yeast has been shown to have anti-candida effects. It does this in part by disrupting the protective layer (biofilm) that forms on the surface of a fungal growth such as candida.

Take probiotics 2-3 hours before or after the antibiotic dose and continue after the antibiotic course is finished.

Akesi products have been created to fit in with any routine. They can be taken any time of day, with or without food

Ingredients

Papaya is a tropical fruit which has long been recognised for its health benefits. It is a rich source of antioxidant nutrients such as carotenes, vitamin C and flavonoids; the B group vitamins, folate and pantothenic acid; and the minerals, potassium, copper and magnesium. The enzyme, vitamin and phyto-rich nutrients of the fruit and leaves supports immune function and can assist in the maintenance of a healthy immune system.

Turmeric contains compounds called Curcuminoids, the most important of which is Curcumin. Curcumin has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a powerful antioxidant. Ginger is known to help digestion, reduce nausea, and help fight the flu and common cold. Gingerol is the main bio-active compound in ginger, responsible for much of its medicinal properties, it has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

Unfortunately, curcumin is poorly absorbed. It helps to consume black pepper with it, which contains piperine – a natural substance that enhances the absorption.

Berries are packed with the antioxidant anthocyanins, ellagic acid and vitamin C. Berries are great source of the phytonutrient flavonoids, and contain high amounts fibre – a nutrient important for a healthy digestive system.

Pomegranate is a good source of fibre. It also contains vitamins A, C and E, iron and other antioxidants. Pomegranate has potent anti-inflammatory properties, which are largely mediated by the antioxidant properties of the punicalagins.

This is due to the natural fermentation process and is normal.

No.
For our Bio-Fermented Tonics and Spritzer we use a slow evaporation process to ensure that the finished product is alcohol free.

Yes, our products are not tested on animals and contain no animal products or by-products.

Our products are nut, sesame, egg, gluten and dairy free.

Akesi products contain sugar that is naturally occurring in the fruit, however these sugars have predominantly been broken down through the natural fermentation process, no sugars have been added.

Berry Spritzer contains a vegetable-based glycerol (a sugar polyol) which has 40% the sweetness of sugar. It has a very low glycaemic index and is suitable for diabetics.

A natural preservative – Lactic acid bacteria.

Our products contain no herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilisers. No artificial preservatives or colourings have been used. We do not hide any ingredients.

Wherever possible we use local Australian ingredients.

We use Australian sourced papaya which to the best of our knowledge is non-GMO. We also regularly seek clarification of ingredients, as suppliers often have multiple geographical locations depending on supply availability.

Please discuss with your healthcare professional before consuming our products if you are taking other medications.

We advise pregnant or breastfeeding customers to please consult with a healthcare professional before consuming our products.

Akesi is not suitable for children under the age of 3. For children aged between 3-6 years old we advise a quarter of an adult serve; for children aged between 6-12 years old we advise half an adult serve.

When starting with probiotics, we advise to start at the suggested serve size and adjust up or down according to how your gut responds. Everybody has a unique gut microbiota and needs to be guided by their own gastrointestinal patterns e.g. number of bowel motions, consistency, gas or bloating.
